Our Mokum is beautiful, and it looks its absolute best from the water! Friends Marcel, Martijn, and Michael spent a lot of time together on the water, wanting to share the liberating feeling of the Amsterdam canals with as many people as possible. This led to the creation of Mokumboot in 2009, offering boat rentals where you can be your own captain. Mokumboot has since become a proud and established name in Amsterdam, allowing you to rent sloops at nine different locations throughout the city.

In 2024, Mokumboot embarks on a new canal adventure, showcasing the Amsterdam canals from open boats. Along the way, we share everything about our city and typical Mokum anecdotes.

Our goal is to provide every guest and renter with a unique Amsterdam experience. We achieve this by creating joy ourselves – informally, in a friendly manner, and by always evolving. We take pride in Mokum(boot)!

TASKS

• You are a host/hostess on board and on the dock.
• You conduct canal cruises according to routes and chartered voyages.
• You provide live guiding during canal cruises, using a script.
• You welcome our guests at the dock. You actively sell tickets and perform ticket checks.
• You sell and serve beverages and food on board.
• Depending on your schedule, you perform startup/closing tasks.
• You conduct maintenance and cleaning activities on board to ensure the boat and the experience for each guest and colleague are optimal.
• You carry out additional (quality) control and administrative tasks and record them appropriately (e.g., in the logbook).
• You promptly and effectively inform the duty manager and/or colleagues about any special circumstances or emergencies.
• As a flexible team player, you contribute to making every Mokumboot day a good day.

In addition to being a skilled and safe skipper, you are a hospitable person who enjoys taking guests along the beautiful Amsterdam canals, sharing historical stories and anecdotes.

• You have a presentable appearance.
• You have proper manners and understand what you can and cannot say.
• You are proactive, work independently, and are a team player.

QUALIFICATIONS

• You have a small boat license 1 and VHF radio license or are willing to obtain them shortly.
• You have ‘social hygiene’ certification or are willing to obtain it shortly.
• You have a swimming diploma. You have experience with canal cruises on the Amsterdam canals.
• You are proficient in English and Dutch.
• Other languages commonly spoken by tourists are a plus.
• Available for 8 to 40 hours, including at least one weekend day per week.
• Shift times may vary between 08:00 and 02:00.
• Possession of a first aid or CPR certificate is a plus.

HOW TO WORK WITH US AS A SKIPPER?

• No boat license? No problem!
  We are looking for enthusiastic colleagues who want to learn! You start as a host and immediately learn the tricks of the trade from an experienced skipper. You gain experience at the helm right away. At the same time, you will obtain your small boat license and VHF radio certificate. Once you have your license, you will learn the finer points of the trade during our experience days. Before you know it, you’ll be the ‘captain.’
• Experience as a skipper on a sloop?
  If you already have experience as a skipper on open boats, you can quickly start with us on our sloops. If you have extensive experience, can and want to sail a bit larger, you might be the skipper for one of our tugboats (historical tour boat).
• Experienced canal boat skipper?
  Are you an experienced canal boat skipper, and do our historical tugboats appeal to you? Respond quickly, and you might be at the helm of these brand-new historical vessels soon.
• Contract type?
  • We are looking for freelancers (ZZP’ers).
  • On-call skippers.
  • Skippers on a payroll.
